Portraits of a single cosmos flower, brought inside to escape the heat. These images were made with window light in the bedroom, filtered through two sets of curtains and a diffuser to try to create some softness. One of my favourite ways to shoot is to choose a starting point and then let things flow, trying different things, and making adjustments as I go. Experimenting with where I let the light through to darken the background and capture the glow of the petals. Turning the flower to see how the light emphasises the shape and form. Playing with texture overlays and grain in editing.
The cosmos plants in the back part of the garden are not doing well in the sun–we water daily but the heat burns them from above. The ones down the side of the fence are better because they get some shade. At some point I think we will plant something else, but seedlings won’t survive until it cools down more consistently. Instead, we’re letting the cosmos run wild, flowers still opening amongst the burnt foliage.
